Resin, Metal, Or Concrete Gardens Statues - The Pros and Cons of Each

Garden sculptures can be made from nearly any durable material.  The most popular are concrete, resin, and metal.  Here are some things you should know about each.

Concrete garden statues:  Because these are made from molds, you can get nearly any size, shape, or style of this type of statue that you would like.  Concrete statues are sold in both finished and unfinished styles.  It is very affordable and if you buy unfinished and paint it yourself then it is even more so.

One thing you should know about concrete garden statuary is that it can get very heavy, very quickly.  If you live in a high wind area this is great, but be sure that you have help moving big pieces.  The only real downside is that concrete is not as detailed as resin.

Resin garden statues:  Resin is a hard plastic material that can be molded into just about any shape imaginable.  Because it  takes detail very well, it is a great material for statues for your garden.  You will often find statues of children playing, Disney characters, and animals made out of resin.  

Resin is an extremely durable substance.  It is much lighter than concrete, but often more expensive.  Resin statues look great in cottage gardens.

Metal garden statues:  These are perfect for formal gardens & are generally absolutely beautiful.  However, metal statues for the garden can be quite pricey.   Also you need to be aware that many metal statues will develop a patina over time.  For instance, copper will turn a lovely shade of green (think the Statue of Liberty).  In general metal garden statues are well worth it.

Constructing a Garden Path

A well-laid path is essential for the successful management of every garden. The direction that it takes must be very clearly thought through to ensure its efficiency. It must be arranged so that there are no temptations to cut corners across the lawn or flower beds and yet as far as possible it should be unobtrusive.

Like the garden itself, a path should be properly drained, especially if it is to be constructed from gravel or a similar porous material. Surrounding ground must also be drained in such a way that the path does not become a watercourse during periods of heavy rain or after snow-melt in colder districts. The scouring out of neatly raked gravel by fast-flowing ground water can be a great source of irritation.

Before construction, consider the possibility of the path also being the line that takes services. Water and electricity can very conveniently be directed along the line of the path so that there is never any danger of interference from cultivation. It is ill-advised to place such services beneath a solid path, such as concrete, but ready access can be gained through gravel, or beneath a paved path.

A sound foundation is vital, even for a simple gravel path. If a generous layer of stone foundation is not laid down first of all it is almost certain that mud will squeeze through and within a season the path will become an unpleasant mud and gravel mixture which will then play host to weeds. Prevent this by using fabric landscape matting laid over the soil in the path area before spreading the gravel. Such material permits water to seep through, but prevents the mud from squeezing upwards.

There are all kinds of gravel and gravel-like materials that can be used for path construction, but all require a proper edging to retain the material. Many gardeners choose 15mm (1/2in) gravel as this is substantial and looks good. It is not the best utility choice though for it is quite difficult to push a wheelbarrow or pushchair over and it creates havoc with high-heeled shoes.

Fine shingle makes a far better surface providing that it is not scattered too liberally. However the best of all is self-binding gravel. This is of gravel-like appearance but of such a texture that it binds together in a neat hard surface. Once laid it merely needs rolling with a garden roller. Crushed limestone can also serve the purpose, but it tends to become dusty during dry weather and stick to shoes on wet days. It can also increase the alkalinity of nearby soil.

Concrete is a serviceable but harsh option, which if laid properly with expansion joints, will last indefinitely. It is not a comfortable path to walk along or work from in hot weather, as there is considerable reflection and glare. The same applies to some of the modern paving slabs made from reconstituted stone. Select these with great care choosing softer more subtle colors to reduce discomfort. Also carefully select the surface. There are a number of more or less non-slip surfaces available; the most natural looking of which is referred to as riven paving.

How to Paint Landscapes

When an artist is face to face with a beautiful view, there would be one and only thought in his or her mind. And the thought would be, "What a spectacular painting this beautiful scene would make!" The art of landscape painting is as old as the art of paintings itself. But there have been certain techniques, which have evolved with the passing of the time. Let us see how the landscape painting is painted, or how it can be painted in a better manner. Here are some of the techniques used by the master artists.

Painting in Stages

Unlike other paintings, which can be done in one go, the landscape paintings should be done in three phases. In the first phase, start painting the objects which are at the far end, at a distance from the eyes. So the sky and the mountain peaks would come first. After painting the things lying at a distance, paint the objects which are closer than those things painted. Finally start painting the things near to you.

Choosing the Colours

The colour scheme would also follow this pattern, more or less. Take the lighter objects first and then proceed onto the darker ones. The things lying in the near vicinity would be darker and attracting more details than the objects at distance. The final stage would be to paint the details. If there are trees, then consider painting the trunks of the trees and the shadows falling on the ground. If there are buildings, then try making them appearing solid. This could be done by painting the surrounding area of those building darker than the other objects. The nearest objects are to be done with smaller brushes and with minute details.

How to Paint Trees

The trees painted in middle distance would require precise treatment regarding their shape, the colours to be used, the tonal values to be ascribed and the shades of colours, including the shades of the shadows that these trees creates on the ground. However minute details like the precision in painting the leaves and branches would not be necessary. Here in the distance, the portion of the land would be painted with subdued green. A tint of transparent golden yellow would make the green subdued and looking warmer. That would give a firm ground for the trees painted in the middle and in the distance.

Algae vs. Lichens in the Garden

What is your opinion on algae and lichens within the garden? Are you trying to discourage them or are you one of the select few who promote their growth. Let me introduce you to these algae and lichens, so you can make an informed decision.

Algae in glasshouses and polytunnels

Algae are the much-maligned green slimes found on ponds and as a greenish scum on paths and drives. You may be surprised to know algae is actually a garden plant, albeit a stem-less and non-flowering specimen. Over winter, disgusting greyish-green algae often builds up on the inside glass of our garden sheds, glasshouses and polytunnels. The solution is to trim back any surrounding planting to allow as much light as possible to enter. Also try to leave the doors and windows open for a few hours each week to prevent the build up of stagnant air. If some of the slightly powdery scum still builds up, you can wipe it off glass with a mild detergent, whereas on polytunnels only wipe the plastic with warm soapy water.

Algae control on steps and paths

Algae and mosses often coat paths and quite dangerously garden steps; damp shade is again a big factor. Reducing shade will cut down on the amount of algae and moss forming; by increasing the access of sunlight, you will also reduce dampness. The application of a copper sulphate solution (commonly known as bluestone) is a time honoured and effective way to combat algae on paths. When applied correctly it has a residual effect that prevents regrowth for up to several years after treatment. Mix copper sulphate or "bluestone" at a rate of 10 grammes to 10 litre of water in a plastic container. Apply on a dry day, brush in, and then leave it 3 weeks to act on the algae. After 3 weeks brush again with a stiff bristled brush and "hey presto". When applying any algae or moss control solution remember to avoid drift onto surrounding lawns, plants and vehicles. Use protection equipment when applying chemicals including a mask with a dust cartridge, safety goggles and impervious gloves with overalls. Remember, apply all chemicals according to the manufacturer's instructions and heed those safety warnings.

Lichens in the garden

However, what happens when this algae teams up with a fungus and the two start to live in a mutually advantageous association or symbiosis? Well, in that situation you get a plant form known as a lichen. A situation where lichens grow in abundance is on old carved stone headstones in graveyards. Many of the age-old stones will display white growths often containing bright yellow or orange splashes.When I have occasion to attend a funeral in a graveyard, I am always struck by the contrast between the mourner's dark garb and the pings and flecks of white, yellow and orange lichen growth. These growths are the lichens, growing where other plants would falter Lichens are tough devils, if there was an SAS for the plant world they would be the first to enlist.

Growing your own lichens

I feel lichens have a place within the garden, they happen to be an accurate indicator of low pollution, no harm in that. Lichen growth also adds a considerable amount of character to feature rocks, boundary walls, terracotta containers and stone garden sculptures. If you would like to encourage this type of growth, try this recipe for "lichen slurry". Mix one tablespoon of ground up lichen to one pint of natural yogurt or buttermilk and mix well. Paint or dab this slurry onto the object you wish the lichen to grow on, sit back and be prepared to wait, as fine-looking lichen growth is quite slow to form. But, worth it.

Home - Room Color & Art

Several years ago, we invited some new acquaintances to the house for dinner. I think that they were very interested in seeing what artists lived like. You know how that goes; artists are out of the norm so naturally their home would reflect their weirdness. Well the dinner was a success but the comments during dinner were a little telling of our new acquaintances. Minerva (all names have been changed to protect the guilty), was of the opinion that all art had to be displayed on stark white walls with white ceilings to top it off. This, according to her emphasis, was akin to the 11th Commandant given to Moses. Not just any white though - bright white. Minerva took great umbrage at our living room walls being a semi-gloss red. We do have a mostly white ceiling but there is also a mural on the ceiling - with (shudder naked) people in it. Worse we also had artwork hanging on the red walls. Needless to say, there was no reciprocal dinner invitation, nor have we seen them since. Obviously, our tastes in home decor are, to be polite, dissimilar.

This is not a polemic on decor, but a reminder that there is more than one "right" way to use wall color to display art. Plain white is perfectly okay for some homes and temperaments. It gives a neutral backdrop so that the art can show through. Plain white does make your home look like an art gallery and a bit sterile (my opinion). On the other hand, lots of different deep rich color tones in one room can be a problem also. It is all a matter of taste, your personality, and how well you pull off the total effect.

There are some better slightly more adventurous solutions - without being totally daring - to make a room more inviting and comfortable. These neutral shades also show off more of you as an individual and can give a different feel to the art you purchased for the room.

Wall Color Choices

When choosing a white wall color; mix in a bit of a warm shade like red (very very little or you end up with pink) or a little yellow to warm the space up with. This will produce a subconscious feeling of energy, liveliness, or movement.

Another neutral shade to think about is a very light beige. Not coffee with cream - far lighter. Beige is a neutral color but not lifeless like stark white. This is also a color that promotes calm.

Think about picking a neutral shade such as a very pale gray - definitely not battleship gray. Make sure that the gray that you pick has some red in it. Grays can feel warm and enticing because of the warm red tints used in the paint. Grays can be cold (blue in the paint mixture) and less inviting. The bluer tones are good if you want to promote a feeling of quiet, calmness, thoughtfulness, etc. If the gray tint is to dark it will make your room(s) look dingy.

Ceilings

The ceilings are considerably easier though. White is usually called for but not just any white. To steal from a great source - Oprah - mix a slight tint of the wall color in the white for your ceiling. The slight tint used in the ceiling white will bring the room together wonderfully.

The hardest part is selecting a color for the walls. For that, input from your spouse/significant other is called for; but only if they live with you. If it is just you - do what feels right. After all this is just paint not brain surgery on your Mother.

If you are not happy with it later - change it! Happy Painting and Arranging!

Home - Color & Art Room

This is not a debate over the propriety, but remember that using more than one "correct" way to paint, to show art. Plain White is perfectly fine for some houses and temperaments. Is there a neutral ground so that the art can shine. Plain white makes your home look like an art gallery and a little 'infertile (my opinion). On the other hand, many rich colors in a room is a problemtoo. It's all about taste, your personality, and as it pulls out all the good effect.

There are some a bit 'more adventurous the better solutions - all without daring - for a room more comfortable. These neutral colors show more of you as a person and can be a different feeling for art, the type purchased for the room.

Wall Color Choices

This month we go into some detail about the care of orchids Cattleya. These orchids are probably the easiest to treat and like all plants need water, electricity and fertilizer. Playing music or talking to them does not hurt, either.

Most Cattleyas grow in the wild rainforests of South America, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Mexico. They thrive in the Andes from altitudes near sea level to high altitudes90,000 to 10,000 feet. These orchids are truly epiphytes or air plants. Are used to being partially covered by canopy of the rainforest and get considerable humidity and light to grow.

As we talk about in the woods above serve to diffuse the light, all light will be bright. Usually not in direct midday sun. Bright light helps them to develop pseudopodia difficult. For those who wish to walk this famous mile, it is like a walk through times of long ago, as the majority of buildings remain original or have been restored to original. You will find endless ``Closes`` which are simply little passageways through from the front of buildings to their rear. Each Close has its own name and also carries its own stories from long ago. You will see the house of John Knox and numerous other venues of great historic interest and you will also see the truly magnificent structure of St. Giles Cathedral which is normally open to the public and most certainly well worth entering. If you are fortunate enough to visit this Cathedral, then make sure to ask someone in there to guide you to the rear of the building where you can enter the remarkable and still original structure of St. Mary's Chapel. Words cannot describe what you will find in this small religious sanctuary. Everything is made from the most ornately carved wood and remembering how long ago it was constructed, you will wonder how it could have been possible for anyone to create such a masterpiece, without the use of modern day tools.

As you travel along the Royal Mile from the Castle end, you will find some large stone arches on the left hand side of the street and these arches lead into the front courtyard of Edinburgh City Chambers. What very few people, including visitors know is that just inside the pubic entrance to the City Chambers is the entrance to a world long forgotten. A city beneath the city where cars do not exist and the only inhabitants today are the ghosts of yesterday and believe me when I say, they do exist. A simple chat to the doorman at the city chambers will enlighten you on how you can gain access to a special tour down into the depths of Edinburgh to a secret and eerie place known as Mary King's Close. Down here below the endless activities of the Royal Mile, you will enter a full and complete street, still as it was in the 1500s with shops, houses and even glass in some of the windows. As the story goes, during the time of the great plague in Edinburgh, officials calculated that in their opinion the centre and cause of the plague was to be found in the place called Mary King's close. As such, it was pronounced that this now rarely visited street, four and five stories tall, would be bricked up and each end and there after, left and abandoned with some of its residents still inside. This was in fact done and as the years rolled by; the street was built over and totally concealed from view forever. As you are guided along narrow sidewalks and old cobbles you will come to what can only be described as a home made shrine, filled with teddy bears, dolls and small toys. This is the place where most people including visitors have seen the walking ghost of a little girl searching for her lost toys. People have been so moved by this apparition that they have returned to the site bearing toys and teddy bears to leave for the child of yesteryear. One of the old shops was originally a bakery and believe it or not, even today all these hundreds of years later, you can still smell the odour of baking bread within that place.

To tell you all about the City of Edinburgh would take me into a full and very thick book and so, what I have told you here is simply to give you a taste of a small portion of the many things you can expect to find in such a wonderful city. There are huge museums, art galleries, botanical gardens, historic houses and buildings to visit, the palace of Hollyrood, the Castle, the Queen's Park and Arthur's Seat, the rocky cliffs where one local decided to push his Wife over with the hops of claiming her insurance. There are open bus tours, interactive ghost tours, theatres of every type and basically an endless array of wonderful things to see and do. The tallest structure you will see in Edinburgh rests in Princes Street aside the Garden and it is known as Scott's Monument. Reed, cane and wicker

For pieces of furniture made of these materials, you can clean them using a vacuum with a brush attach. You also have the option of washing them with mild soap and lukewarm water. Just make sure that you do not wet the wooden parts of the furniture. Use a dry cloth to dry the surface and to absorb any excess moisture.

Duke Gardens Conservatories - Last Chance To Visit

The conservatories at Duke Gardens, Somerville, New Jersey will be closing on the 28th May 2008, so if you wish to see them as the owners originally planned them, you just have a few days left before refurbishment changes them forever.

There are two conservatories at Duke Gardens, the Orchid Range and the Indoor Display Gardens; but first some history of the garden.

Duke Gardens is a 2,700-acre estate and was developed by tobacco magnate James Duke. He established the American Tobacco Company that controlled a huge volume of the US tobacco market until the US Supreme Court ordered the dissolution of the company in an anti-trust decision in 1911.

Starting in 1893 when he was 37-years old, James like a latter day Capability Brown, started on a programme that was to transform farmland into a garden landscape, a venture that was to last the next 32-years until his death in 1925. The work included excavation for nine lakes, erecting 45 buildings, two and a half miles of stone walls and more than 18 miles of roads. He also installed 35 fountains and numerous sculptures.

After he died, his daughter Doris then just 12 years of age, inherited the estate and when she was old enough enhanced the property further.

The Orchid Range was built in 1900, designed by Kendall Taylor & Stevens, it was built by Lord & Burnham, probably the most famous maker of greenhouses and conservatories in the USA.

When it was first opened the Orchid Range was used for commercial growing of orchids for local and New York markets. However, air freight and lower overseas labour costs undercut their prices by the 1950's and 60's.

The Indoor Display Garden was originally known as the New Greenhouse. Designed by Horace Trumbauer, a well-known Philadelphia architect who was known for his designs for mansions, but who also went on to design office buildings in his later life, like the Orchid Range it was built by Lord & Burnham.

Lord & Burnham built the New Greenhouse in two stages. Stage one was completed in 1909, while the second stage was not completed until 1917. Originally it was built to provide cut flowers and plants for the Dukes homes but like the Orchid Range, in later years it was also used to grow plants for the commercial market. When this became uneconomic, Doris Duke changed the New Greenhouse into the Indoor Display Garden. She started this project in 1958 and opened it to the public in 1964. The display is a series of gardens reputedly designed by Doris herself, the inspiration probably coming from her visits overseas where she saw different garden designs. Returning home she captured these within the Indoor Display Garden.

From the America's there is an American Desert containing cacti and other succulents, including barrel cactus, giant aloe, and crown of thorns, aloe vera and others. Meanwhile the Colonial Garden, represents gardens of the South Eastern States showing camellias, azaleas and magnolia.

From Europe there is an English Garden displaying topiary, a rock garden, herbaceous borders, plus a 16th century Elizabethan Knot Garden and an 18th century succulent garden. France is represented by a Parterre planted in a geometric parterre, while Italy has lush plantings in a courtyard complete with statues in the Romantic style.

The Middle East is represented by an Indo-Persian Garden complete with fountains, carved marble screens, orange trees, Mediterranean cypress and a Persian rose garden.

There is also a Japanese Garden that includes a tea house with bonsai trees and red maples. A Chinese Garden complete with a koi carp stream, rock formations and bamboo, camphor trees, bleeding heart and jasmine.

There are some that argue that these displays should be left as designed by Doris Duke, but to my mind they look dated and rather twee. A young Doris with all her wealth at her disposal would probably tire of them as they are now and want them updated.

The conservatories at Duke Farms will close at the end of May 2008 and over the next two years will be re-glazed and have their heating systems modernised. They are due to reopen in 2010 with new displays.

That is a reasonable question - Why Buy Sculpture. Sculpture is a demanding lover and housemate. It demands to have its own plinth or pedestal to be seated on. With "sculpture in the round", it demands to be placed so that all the visitors can see how beautiful it is, on all sides. It also demands a space of its own - not sharing wall space with those...those..paintings... For all that, sculpture does hold a wonderful place in the heart of a home or business.

Sculpture can bring a missing element to the interior or exterior of your home or business. Sometimes this missing element is physical: like a central point of interest to a room or garden, or maybe a tangible symbol of one or more of your values or special causes. Sculpture can also bring a room into a sharper focus by introducing tranquility, thoughtfulness, a general feeling of apprehension, etc. A lot of the time both a physical element and a sharper focus or feeling can both be accommodated by a sculpture.

Sculpture versus Painting:
Sculpture is just like a painting but better in several respects. With a painting, there is just one viewing point - the frontal one. Difference will be that with a painting, the detail will be on the front. With sculpture that delightful detail could be on the back, on the sides, or slyly sitting on the top of your sculpture.

Sculpture has an advantage over painting. When you bring in a sculpture to your home or office, you don't have to necessarily rearrange all of your wall artwork to accommodate it. When you buy a painting, many times all the artwork has to come down and the new painting had to find its home by displacing other paintings. Sculpture does not demand that. Since sculpture is its own island (on a pedestal or on the floor, it takes up floor space not wall space. This involves at the very most moving the new sculpture around the room to find the penultimate placement. Contrast that to taking down every painting and reshuffling their order and placement in the room.

Sculpture & You
Sculpture as a symbol, can stand for the multi-dimensional person that either you want to be or are - just like sculpture is multi-dimensional. Painting has color and design to its credit. Sculpture has color, design and true depth or dimension. It brings a new dimension to the art-viewing experience and also your enjoyment of it.

Sometimes just like in love, there is that steamroller that flattens you when you walk into a space with sculpture. It is a bad case of love at first sight. This is not a bad thing. Art refreshes the soul, is a delight to the eye, and shows clients, visitors and friends some of what you value. Rich Heritage of Russian Silver and Enamel Sculptures

One of the greatest Russian silversmiths has been Pavel Ovchinnikov through most of the Russian silver and enamel history. Not only was he famous for his silversmith working talents, but also this talented man just happened to be vital in the reviving of the traditional techniques in enameling. Pavel Ovchinnikov was instrumental in bring back the Champleve technique, the Filigree technique and the technique of Plique-a-jour.

In the year of 1853, Pavel Ovchinnikov officially opened his workshop within the heart of Moscow, Russia, and this quaint little workshop quickly turned into a very well known Russian silver and enamel-crafting factory. With the process of the bringing back of the Filigree technique, this is a silversmith variation that is very similar to the Cloisonné technique where the silver wires are delicately twisted into detailed workings. With the Plique-a-jour classical technique that Pavel Ovchinnikov brought back that similarly consists of the variation enamel filigree technique that consists of there being no backing of precious metals behind the beautifully colorful enamel, so to allow the light to flow throughout the enamel colors.

By the second part of the century that his original workshop was founded in, he would then be filling the international expositions around the world with a wide variety of his extravagant Russian silver and enamel works of art. It was in one of the American's Chicago International Exhibitions that an American commissioner officially recognized the work of Mr. Ovchinnikov in 1893 for the enamel opaque objects had a wonderful Byzantine style with beauty of formations that carried an excellent richness within the initial coloring.

The silversmith works of Pavel Ovchinnikov is still be auctioned off and collected today, after so long ago that these pieces were originally created. One recent piece of Mr. Ovchinnikov has been a awesomely hand crafted Trompe D'Oeuil Cigarette Case. This magnificent item sold for a whopping 14,000 in American money. The design resembled a cloth that is folded and adorned with all kinds of detailed decorations. The silver body its self delicately resembled a cloth that is woven and the decorations of enamel resembled a common embroidery style that was done during the original time period creation.

Another recently purchased item done directly Mr. Ovchinnikov was auctioned off for 4,500 American dollars. It was also a cigarette case shaped irregularly in cube design and was of the silver medium, and embellished with plants and insects. The top comes completely off when lifted and the inside was elaborated in a Persian carpet fringe like design.
